Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson for the House of Representatives, has lauded Speaker Abbas Tajudeen for his strong leadership throughout 2025, a year filled with political and institutional challenges. Agbese said the Speaker successfully maintained unity in the Green Chamber while addressing issues that could have destabilized the legislature.
According to Agbese, 2025 was a critical period for the 10th House, with the Speaker facing intense pressure both from within the House and from external forces. Despite these pressures, Abbas demonstrated that effective leadership involves making difficult decisions based on truth and the collective good, rather than personal convenience.
The Deputy Spokesperson cited the controversy surrounding alleged changes to gazetted tax laws and recruitment into the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) as examples of situations that tested the Speaker’s resolve. Abbas responded by establishing a seven-member ad hoc committee to investigate the matters and instructed that the tax laws be re-gazetted to reflect proper National Assembly approval, demonstrating his commitment to transparency.
Agbese also highlighted Abbas’ consistent attention to members’ welfare, constituency projects, and the Rivers State emergency situation. He concluded that the Speaker’s actions in 2025 reflected service, accountability, and dedication to the stability of the House and the advancement of Nigeria’s democracy.
