PDP condemns alleged assault, public humiliation of Obaseki’s cousin in Benin

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the alleged assault, public humiliation, and forced stripping of Dr. Pedro Agbonifo Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki. The party described the incident as a deliberate act of political violence and accused supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of carrying out the attack. The incident reportedly occurred on December 28, 2025, at Uwa Primary School football field in Benin City, after Dr. Obaseki went to play football.

According to the PDP, Dr. Obaseki was dragged by a mob towards the Oba of Benin’s Palace, harassed, threatened, and subjected to degrading treatment. The party stressed that the attack was coordinated and inconsistent with the dignity and traditions of Benin Kingdom. “Benin civilisation is renowned for restraint and respect for human worth. The hooligans behind this act do not represent Benin and are a disgrace to its culture,” said Edo State PDP Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie.

The PDP emphasized that Dr. Obaseki posed no threat to public order and rejected any justification for the attack under the pretext of protecting traditional institutions. The party called for the immediate intervention of law enforcement, urging the Edo State Commissioner of Police to identify, arrest, and prosecute all involved, regardless of political affiliation. They highlighted that mob action and torture have no place under the law.

Expressing sympathy to Dr. Obaseki and his family, the PDP demanded a public disassociation from the incident by traditional institutions, a clear statement from the state government, and concrete steps to end political thuggery in Edo State. The party warned that silence from authorities and political leaders only encourages violence and undermines public confidence.
