The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has asked Governor Seyi Makinde to explain how an alleged ₦50 billion relief fund meant for victims of the 2024 Ibadan explosion was handled. The party says residents deserve to know whether such funds were received and how they were spent. The demand follows public claims that the federal government released a large intervention fund after the deadly Bodija explosion.
The explosion happened on January 18, 2024, in the Bodija area of Ibadan, killing several people and destroying many homes. Authorities blamed illegal miners who reportedly stored explosives inside a building. After the incident, the Oyo State Government announced ₦4.5 billion in support for victims, while Governor Makinde later presented a report to President Bola Tinubu.
The controversy grew after former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose alleged that ₦50 billion was released for reconstruction and relief, but did not pass through the state government’s official records. Makinde’s media team dismissed the claim and asked for proof, but Fayose later shared a document online suggesting that the money was requested as intervention funding for rebuilding the affected areas.
Reacting to this, the Oyo APC said the governor must give a clear account of what happened to the alleged funds and not rely on his aides to respond. The party insisted that transparency is important, especially when public money and victims’ welfare are involved, and urged the state government to openly clarify the matter to restore public trust.
