Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has paid the final tranche of ₦8.234 billion in severance gratuity, accommodation, and leave allowances to 1,371 former local government councillors who served between 2021 and 2024. The payment marks the end of all outstanding liabilities owed to them by the state government. Former councillors celebrated the news, expressing joy after waiting for their dues since 2021.
Governor Yusuf recalled his promise to settle the final tranche before the end of 2025 and said, “Today, we have not only fulfilled our promises but settled everything we owed you.” He thanked God for granting him the opportunity to complete the payments, which he said reflects his administration’s commitment to social justice, fairness, and the welfare of citizens.
In total, over ₦15 billion has now been disbursed to former councillors. Governor Yusuf emphasized that the exercise demonstrates people-oriented policies aimed at ensuring the dividends of democracy reach the grassroots. He described the payment as a way of honoring public service and boosting the morale of current public office holders.
Hajiya Saadatu Yusha’u, Chairperson of ALGON, hailed the settlement as proof of Governor Yusuf’s dedication to fulfilling campaign promises. The event saw attendance from top government officials, senior civil servants, and representatives of the beneficiaries, who all commended the administration for prioritizing public welfare and honoring commitments.
