Senate approves troops deployment to Benin Republic

The Nigerian Senate has approved the deployment of troops to the Benin Republic following a request from President Bola Tinubu. The decision is part of regional efforts to maintain peace and stop threats to democracy and security in West Africa.

Lawmakers said the move aligns with Nigeria’s role under the ECOWAS security framework, which allows member states to support one another during security emergencies. The Senate stressed that the mission is not an invasion but a peacekeeping operation aimed at preventing unrest.

During deliberations, senators highlighted the importance of protecting Nigeria’s borders and stopping instability from spreading across the region. They noted that insecurity in neighboring countries could directly affect Nigeria if not addressed early.

Many analysts believe the approval shows Nigeria’s commitment to regional stability and collective security. However, some Nigerians have also called on the government to ensure that domestic security challenges receive equal attention while supporting peace abroad.
