Improve work packages, welfare of Nigerian doctors for better output – NMA tells FG

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has urged the Federal Government to improve the welfare and working conditions of doctors across the country. According to the association, the current work environment is too stressful, poorly equipped, and discouraging for many health professionals. They said better welfare will not only motivate doctors but also help reduce the rate at which they leave Nigeria for greener pastures abroad.

The NMA explained that doctors are struggling with excessive workloads, limited facilities, and low pay, which affect their performance and the overall quality of healthcare services. They warned that unless urgent steps are taken, Nigeria may continue to lose its best medical talents to countries that offer better opportunities.

The association further appealed to the government to upgrade hospitals, provide modern medical equipment, and ensure timely payment of salaries and allowances. According to them, improving the healthcare system is impossible without making the welfare of medical workers a top priority.

The NMA concluded by urging policymakers to treat health sector reform as a national emergency. They insisted that when doctors are well cared for, patients receive better treatment, and the nation benefits in return.
