School abductions engineered to justify genocide claims – Sheikh Gumi

Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has alleged that the rising cases of school abductions in Nigeria are being deliberately used to support claims that a genocide is taking place. According to him, some groups are manipulating the situation to mislead the public and create fear. He argued that instead of helping to solve insecurity, these claims only worsen tension.

Gumi explained that the repeated kidnappings of schoolchildren are part of a larger plan by certain interests to paint the government and specific communities in a negative light. He said the narrative of genocide is being spread to gain sympathy and international attention. The cleric insisted that such accusations are false and harmful.

He also criticised those he believes profit from insecurity by using kidnappings as political tools. Gumi stressed that pointing fingers will not end the crisis. Instead, he urged leaders to focus on addressing poverty, banditry, and lack of development, which he believes are the real causes of the problem. He warned that fear-driven narratives distract the country from real solutions.

The cleric called for unity, dialogue, and a more sincere approach to tackling insecurity. He encouraged Nigerians to avoid misinformation and support efforts aimed at restoring peace. According to him, resolving the issue requires honesty, cooperation, and a deeper understanding of what fuels violence in affected regions.
