Insecurity: CAN calls for closure of schools

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged the government to consider shutting down schools temporarily in areas facing high levels of insecurity. The group said the safety of students and teachers must come first, especially with the increasing cases of kidnappings and attacks on learning centres across the country. CAN noted that children cannot learn in fear and called for urgent protective measures.

According to CAN, criminal groups now target schools because they know students are vulnerable. The association warned that unless stronger security systems are put in place, more schools could be attacked. They advised the government to send more security personnel to threatened communities and improve surveillance around educational institutions.

CAN also appealed to parents and school owners to stay alert. They encouraged communities to work together and report suspicious activities. The group added that Nigeria cannot afford to risk the lives of young learners as the country continues to battle insecurity on many fronts.

The association stressed that the temporary closure of schools should not be seen as a setback but as a necessary safety precaution. CAN urged leaders to act quickly and restore peace so that children can return to classes without fear. They emphasized that education must continue, but only when lives are protected.
