Grant Nnamdi Kanu pardon – Group urges Tinubu govt

A civil rights group has appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to grant a presidential pardon to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The group said releasing Kanu would help calm rising tensions in the South-East and open the door for meaningful dialogue. According to them, the continued detention has not brought peace but has instead increased frustration among the people.

The group explained that a political solution is more effective than prolonged legal battles. They argued that many security issues in the region are tied to the agitation for Kanu’s release, and addressing his case could help restore stability. They urged the Federal Government to take bold steps towards reconciliation rather than confrontation.

They also appealed to elders, traditional rulers, and political leaders in the South-East to join the call for peace. The group believes that a united voice will make it easier for the government to consider a pardon. They emphasized that national unity should be the priority and that forgiveness is a key part of healing.

The organisation concluded by urging the government to embrace dialogue to prevent further unrest. They said granting Nnamdi Kanu a pardon would not only show compassion but also support efforts to rebuild trust between the region and the central government.
