Govt knows those responsible for killings in Nigeria – Cardinal Onaiyekan

Cardinal John Onaiyekan has stated that the Nigerian government cannot claim ignorance about the people responsible for the ongoing killings across the country. Speaking during a recent event, the respected cleric said the continuous attacks on innocent citizens show a failure in leadership and security management. He stressed that Nigerians deserve clear answers and firm action, not silence and excuses.

According to Onaiyekan, the widespread violence did not begin overnight, and those carrying out the attacks are not invisible. He insisted that the government has enough intelligence, reports, and resources to identify the masterminds behind these killings. The cleric added that allowing the violence to continue suggests a lack of political will to confront those responsible.

He further expressed concern over how Nigerian citizens have become targets in their own communities. Onaiyekan lamented that instead of enjoying peace, people are living in fear, especially in regions experiencing frequent bandit and terrorist attacks. He urged authorities to treat the protection of lives as a top priority, saying no country can progress when its citizens are unsafe.

The Cardinal called on political leaders, security agencies, and community heads to work together to end the bloodshed. He emphasised that justice must be served and that the government must show sincerity in confronting those behind the violence. According to him, only genuine commitment and transparency can restore trust and bring lasting peace to Nigeria.
