A peace advocate, Youssouf, has responded strongly to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide. According to Youssouf, Trump’s statements do not reflect the true situation on the ground and risk fuelling unnecessary religious tension in the country.
Youssouf explained that Boko Haram’s earliest and most consistent victims were Muslims, particularly those in the northern part of Nigeria who resisted the group’s extremist ideology. He noted that thousands of Muslim clerics, community leaders, and civilians have been killed over the years, making it misleading to frame the conflict as one targeted only at Christians.
He further argued that Nigeria’s security challenges affect people of all religions, and portraying the crisis as a Christian genocide undermines efforts to maintain peace and unity. Youssouf called on global figures like Trump to make informed statements that reflect Nigeria’s complexities rather than deepen divisions.
The advocate concluded by urging both Nigerians and the international community to focus on solutions that address insecurity for everyone, warning that misinformation could worsen already fragile ethnic and religious relations.
