Loss of music with morals, accelerated decadence in Nigeria – Spyro

Nigerian singer Oludipe David, widely known as Spyro, has expressed deep concern over what he describes as the loss of value and meaningful messages in today’s music. Speaking during an interview on the Adesope Live Show, the artist argued that modern songs focus more on “vibes” than substance, leading to a decline in music that inspires or teaches positive values.

According to Spyro, earlier generations of musicians used their art to send strong messages, regardless of the genre. He noted that listeners could once feel the depth and emotional weight of a song, but now most artists simply create music for fun or commercial success. The singer believes this shift has removed the moral and emotional impact music once had on society.

Spyro further stated that this erosion of meaningful content is linked to the increasing moral decay in Nigeria. He explained that many artists today prioritize money over influence and no longer see music as a tool for inspiring change or promoting values. The result, he said, is a culture heavily driven by trends but lacking direction.

He emphasized the need for today’s musicians to find a balance — to keep the “vibes” that make Afrobeats globally appealing while still infusing positive messages, values, and purpose into their sounds. Spyro maintained that music can still be entertaining and meaningful at the same time.
