Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s energy portend regional catastrophe – UK

The United Kingdom has warned that Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure could have severe consequences for the region. British officials stated that targeting energy facilities not only endangers Ukrainian civilians but also risks destabilizing neighboring countries that depend on Ukrainian energy supplies.

According to the UK government, repeated strikes on power plants, pipelines, and other critical energy facilities could lead to widespread blackouts, disrupt heating for millions, and exacerbate humanitarian crises during the winter months. Officials emphasized that the attacks may also hinder global energy markets, leading to higher prices and supply shortages beyond Europe.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office stated, “Deliberate strikes on civilian energy infrastructure are unacceptable. They threaten regional stability and could result in far-reaching economic and humanitarian consequences.”

The warning comes as Russia continues its offensive in Eastern Ukraine, with international observers expressing concern over the increasing targeting of energy assets. The UK, along with other allies, is calling for urgent measures to protect critical infrastructure and prevent further escalation.
