Reps order suspension of CBT rollout for WAEC 2026 exams

The House of Representatives has ordered the suspension of the proposed Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The directive came after lawmakers expressed concern that many schools and students across Nigeria are not adequately prepared for the full digital transition. The resolution followed a motion raised during plenary, urging WAEC to suspend the CBT rollout until sufficient infrastructure and training are provided.

Lawmakers pointed out that several public schools in rural and semi-urban areas still lack computers, stable electricity, and internet connectivity, making it unfair to subject all students to CBT examinations. They warned that rushing the process could worsen the inequality between candidates from privileged and disadvantaged backgrounds.

The House directed its Committee on Basic Education to engage with WAEC, the Federal Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders to develop a gradual implementation plan that will ensure inclusivity and fairness.

While lawmakers acknowledged the need to embrace digital assessment methods, they stressed that the rollout must be done responsibly, with adequate preparation and infrastructure support.
