2026 WCQ Playoffs: We must stop Aubameyang – Iwobi speaks ahead Super Eagles vs Gabon

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has stressed that Nigeria must find a way to stop Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when they face Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash.

Aubameyang has been in excellent form for Gabon during the qualifiers. The Olympique Marseille forward has scored seven goals in nine games, proving he is still one of Africa’s most dangerous attackers despite being 36 years old. The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker will lead Gabon’s attack in Thursday’s semi-final playoff showdown.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Iwobi admitted that limiting Aubameyang’s influence will be key for Nigeria.

“He’s getting older, but you wouldn’t know it. He still plays like a very young player,” Iwobi said. “We need to find a way to lock him down. I don’t know how we will do it, but we must.”

Both teams will be fighting for a spot in the final playoff round as they continue their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
