14 churches razed, 117 worshipers killed in Enugu by Jihadists in four years – Intersociety

A human rights group, Intersociety, has raised alarm over rising attacks on Christian communities in Enugu State over the past four years. According to their report, violent groups described as jihadists have destroyed 14 churches and killed at least 117 worshippers during this period.

Intersociety explained that the attacks mostly happened in rural areas where security presence is weak. The victims were mainly church members and local residents, targeted during worship services or community activities. The organization said the situation has left many families homeless and scared, while some churches can no longer operate due to destruction and fear of further violence.

The group called on the government and security agencies to act urgently, stressing that innocent people must not continue to suffer for simply practicing their faith. They demanded better protection for rural communities, faster investigations, and punishment for those responsible.

Community members and religious leaders also appealed for peace and stronger security support. They encouraged citizens not to lose hope and urged authorities to restore confidence and safety across affected areas in Enugu State.

This report has sparked renewed discussion about religious freedom, security, and the need for lasting peace in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
