The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents and registered auctioneers has raised concerns over alleged secret auctions conducted by the Nigeria Customs Service. According to the group, some seized goods belonging to the government are being disposed of without transparency and without following due process. They say many licensed auctioneers are being sidelined despite laws that require public and transparent auction procedures.
Speaking to journalists, representatives of the association claimed that the Customs Service has been conducting auctions privately instead of announcing them openly. They argued that this practice denies the public an equal opportunity to bid and creates room for corruption. They insisted that proper auction procedures would allow government to generate higher revenue and ensure fairness for all interested buyers.
The auctioneers also called for strict adherence to the Public Procurement Act and Customs regulations. They reminded authorities that registered professionals are supposed to handle public auctions to guarantee accountability. According to them, the current situation reduces trust in the system and may lead to loss of public funds.
They urged the federal government and the Ministry of Finance to step in and investigate the complaints. They called for a full review of the Nigeria Customs auction process to ensure openness, fairness, and compliance with the law. They further requested that all licensed auctioneers be given equal access to information regarding seized items and auction schedules.
While awaiting a government response, the auctioneers vowed to continue speaking out against practices they believe undermine transparency. They expressed hope that reforms will be introduced to restore public confidence in the Customs auction system and ensure that government assets are sold properly for the benefit of all Nigerians.
