Trump’s threat: APC using ‘funny’ friends for diplomacy – Olawepo-Hashim

Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) over its response to threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Nigeria. According to him, the ruling party is relying on “funny friends” and unqualified individuals to handle serious diplomatic matters that affect the nation’s image and security. He warned that such an approach could damage Nigeria’s international relations and worsen the current situation.

Olawepo-Hashim stated that diplomacy requires experience, tact, and strategic thinking, not emotional reactions or political propaganda. He lamented that instead of engaging credible international diplomats to respond professionally, some APC supporters are making statements that sound more like social media arguments than serious foreign policy. He cautioned that Nigeria needs skilled voices, not loud ones, during sensitive global discussions.

He noted that Trump’s recent comments should not be dismissed lightly, as the U.S. remains a powerful nation and Nigeria’s major international partner. According to him, even if Nigerians disagree with Trump’s tone or approach, the situation calls for strategic engagement and calm leadership. He urged the government to consult experienced diplomats and statesmen to handle the matter responsibly.

Olawepo-Hashim also reminded political leaders that national security and international relations should not be treated as tools for domestic politics. He advised political actors to prioritise Nigeria’s long-term interests over party sentiments. He added that nations that want respect do not respond to global matters unprofessionally or with cheap rhetoric.

He concluded by urging the APC administration to adopt a more mature diplomatic process and show leadership in managing the current international tension. He stressed that constructive engagement, not careless comments, will protect Nigeria’s interests and global reputation.
