Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and Board of Trustees member, Bode George, has criticized the recent court ruling that halted the party’s national convention. The Federal High Court in Abuja, led by Justice James Omotosho, ordered the PDP not to proceed with its planned convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.
In a strong reaction, George described the judgement as dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy, saying it could create a worrying precedent for political processes in the country. He argued that political parties should be allowed to run their internal affairs unless they clearly violate constitutional rules.
George warned that the decision could negatively affect the nation’s stability and called it a direct threat to democratic practice. He urged the judge to stay away from partisan involvement, suggesting that such rulings push the judiciary into political battles instead of focusing on legal interpretation.
The former PDP Deputy National Chairman (South) further appealed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council to review the situation. He said the judiciary must avoid actions that could cause disorder or weaken political institutions.
According to him, judges should not interfere in party administration, and their responsibility must remain interpreting the law and protecting democratic values—not influencing party activities.
