Akwa Ibom: Masquerade leader, one other arrested for alleged criminal activities, public disturbance

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a leader of a masquerade group, identified as Uwem Umana, along with another suspect, for their alleged involvement in criminal activities and public disturbance. The arrests followed a distress call from a resident who reported attacks and extortion by the masked group.

According to the Police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, members of the masquerade group were accused of assaulting residents, including NYSC members, blocking a public road, and extorting money from road users. The group allegedly used dangerous weapons such as machetes, sticks, and spears during their operations.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Umana, who is the leader of the “Ekpo” masquerade in the community, had authorized his followers to parade in masquerade outfits despite an existing restriction on such displays. Police operatives quickly moved to the scene and apprehended the suspects to avoid further violence.

In a separate operation, another suspect, David Michael, was arrested while fully dressed in masquerade attire and allegedly preparing to launch an attack on a nearby village. Both men have been charged to court after the police concluded their investigation.

The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, assured the public that the command remains committed to maintaining peace and security in the state. He warned that the police will not tolerate any act of violence or lawlessness under the cover of cultural activities.
