Fuel prices will eventually moderate – Tinubu Spokesperson on 15% petrol import duty

The Presidency has assured Nigerians that fuel prices will not remain high forever despite the newly-introduced 15 percent import duty on petrol. According to President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson, the policy is part of a long-term economic plan, and the cost of petrol will eventually reduce once the system stabilises. He explained that the government is working to build a stronger energy market instead of depending on imported products forever.

Speaking further, the spokesperson noted that the duty will encourage investment in local refineries and fuel production. He said Nigeria cannot continue importing petrol without developing its own energy capacity. The government believes that with improved supply and local refining, fuel prices will naturally begin to moderate over time.

He also stated that the current hardship is temporary and necessary for long-term gain. According to him, many successful nations passed through similar reforms before enjoying stable economies. The spokesperson urged Nigerians to remain patient, saying the government understands the pain citizens are facing and is committed to easing the burden soon.

The Presidency stressed that revenue from the import duty will support critical national projects such as infrastructure, health, and education. He added that transparent management of funds is key and assured the public that accountability measures are already in place to avoid waste.

In closing, the spokesperson called for cooperation from fuel marketers, industry stakeholders, and the public. He insisted that the new policy is not meant to punish Nigerians but to build a stronger energy system and create a better economic future for the country.
