Osun 2026: Osogbo coalition demands indigene as next state governor

A coalition of groups in Osogbo has called for the next governor of Osun State to come from the state capital in the 2026 election. The coalition argued that despite Osogbo being the political and administrative centre of the state, no indigene has ever been elected governor, and the time has come for the city to produce its own leader.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, its leaders said Osogbo has contributed greatly to the development and stability of Osun State, yet continues to be politically sidelined. They noted that the capital city hosts major government offices, provides economic support and remains peaceful, but still has not enjoyed equal political representation like other major zones in the state.

The group explained that their demand is not about division or favouritism, but fairness and inclusion. According to them, power rotation among zones is important for unity, and since other regions have had their turn, Osogbo deserves the opportunity to lead. They stressed that residents of the state capital are ready to support qualified candidates who can bring growth and development.

The coalition encouraged political parties to zone their governorship tickets to Osogbo ahead of the 2026 polls. They also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth organisations to join the call, saying it will promote equity and strengthen the state’s political structure. The group added that giving Osogbo a chance will boost morale and show that every part of the state matters.

Many political observers believe the demand could influence party strategies as preparations for 2026 begin. While some residents across the state support the idea of zoning to Osogbo, others believe leadership should be based on competence, not location. As the election season draws closer, discussions around equity, zoning, and representation in Osun politics are expected to intensify.
