Abuja court sentences driver to prison, imposes ₦3.2 million fine for damaging FRSC vehicles

A court in Abuja has sentenced a driver to prison and ordered him to pay a ₦3.2 million fine after he damaged vehicles belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The court ruled that the driver acted irresponsibly and caused serious damage, stressing that government property must be respected at all times.

According to reports, the driver was taken to court after an incident where he violently struggled with FRSC officers and ended up damaging their patrol vehicles. The judge noted that such behaviour puts road safety officials at risk and disrupts public order. The court therefore imposed a jail term alongside the fine as a deterrent.

The authorities emphasized that assaults on law enforcement officers and damage to public assets will not be tolerated. FRSC officials have faced frequent attacks from motorists attempting to resist arrest or evade penalties, and the agency has repeatedly warned against such actions.

The court added that drivers must remain calm and follow lawful instructions from officers on duty. It stressed that anyone who feels wrongly accused should pursue legal channels rather than resorting to violence or destruction. Respect for public institutions, the judge said, helps maintain road discipline and national order.

With this ruling, the government hopes to send a strong message that reckless behaviour on the road and attacks on security agencies will carry serious consequences. The FRSC welcomed the judgment and encouraged Nigerians to support safety campaigns and obey traffic regulations to avoid harsh penalties.
