Nigerian youth have been encouraged to turn their street hustle and everyday energy into real skills that can earn money and open global opportunities. Abiola Odetola, Special Adviser on Strategy and Policy Development to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, shared this message at the “StreetToSkills” event on Wednesday. Odetola, who has worked in youth empowerment for years, explained that survival hustle alone is not enough in today’s world — skills are the real tools for success.
He highlighted that the economy may be tough, but young people must rise above circumstances and build themselves. According to him, young Nigerians should learn valuable skills, stay creative, act with purpose, and position themselves to compete worldwide. Odetola added that street life has raw talent, but it needs structure, mentorship, and support to grow into profitable opportunities.
The “StreetToSkills” programme was described as a national platform designed to prepare young Nigerians for the future. The initiative connects youths to real opportunities in technology, creativity, sports, and green economy sectors. Odetola believes that when young people turn hustle into useful skills, they can change the story of Africa — community by community.
Also speaking at the event, Oluwatosin Adejayo, founder of Design Cave, stressed that empowerment and digital training help young people find purpose and avoid depression. She celebrated the high participation of women in the programme, noting that many are breaking stereotypes and shaping careers in technology and innovation.
Another partner, Tosin Fakile of Devcent Trainings, emphasized the power of collaboration. She explained that when organizations work together, they can reach more youths, give better opportunities, and create the next generation of tech leaders. The 37 youths trained are now ready to solve digital challenges, build real solutions, and grow their careers.
