Nasarawa Assembly passes climate change bill, moves to establish advisory committee

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed a new bill aimed at creating a strong policy foundation for tackling climate change in the state. The bill, introduced by lawmaker Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, was approved during a plenary session in Lafia on Monday. This move highlights the state’s commitment to protecting the environment and preparing for climate challenges.

Speaker Danladi Jatau explained that the bill is a big step toward promoting sustainability across all sectors in Nasarawa State. He noted that climate change affects every area of life, including agriculture, health, water resources, and infrastructure, so a structured approach is necessary for long-term development.

One of the major features of the new law is the establishment of a Climate Change Advisory Committee, which will be led by the state governor. This committee will be responsible for guiding government agencies, coordinating climate-related policies, and recommending actions for climate adaptation and environmental protection.

The committee will also help create strategies to reduce environmental damage, support clean energy initiatives, and ensure the state is better prepared for natural disasters linked to climate change. Lawmakers believe this approach will boost sustainable growth and improve the quality of life for residents.

Speaker Jatau directed the Clerk of the House to produce the final clean copy of the bill and send it to Governor Abdullahi Sule for approval. Once signed, Nasarawa State will officially begin implementing a structured climate action framework.
