Nigerian superstar Tiwa Savage has rejected claims that Afrobeats is declining, insisting the genre is still rising and dominating globally. Some industry figures, including Paul Okoye (Paulo) and DJ Big N, recently suggested that Afrobeats is experiencing its worst performance in 20 years. But Savage strongly disagrees.
Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, the award-winning singer said Afrobeats remains one of the fastest-growing genres in the world. According to her, the genre continues to top charts, sell out arenas, and strengthen African cultural pride on the global stage.
Tiwa Savage also shared a personal reflection about her early years in London, saying she once felt embarrassed being African. However, she said the global success and positive impact of Afrobeats has made her extremely proud of her identity. She noted that African music has succeeded despite limited support and infrastructure.
She recalled how many doubted the genre’s longevity, claiming Afrobeats would only enjoy “15 minutes of fame.” Today, she says, Afrobeats is proving critics wrong by dominating global platforms and cultural conversations. Savage added that Africans—especially Nigerians—have a huge global presence and the music is not slowing down.
As she put it, “We are Africans and we are unstoppable.” The singer emphasized that no amount of pushback can erase the rising influence of African music and culture around the world.
