Yobe State has been plunged into darkness following the destruction of key electricity towers by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Katarko village, located in Gujba Local Government Area of the state. The attack has disrupted power supply across several communities, forcing residents to adapt to blackout conditions once again.
The Yobe Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday. The company explained that efforts were underway to restore power through alternative sources, particularly to customers in Damaturu and nearby areas. It also revealed that YEDC was working closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to achieve a bulk restoration of power through the national grid.
In the meantime, Maiduguri Metropolitan City will continue to receive electricity from the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP). The company urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity near power facilities to law enforcement agencies or the nearest YEDC office.
This latest attack is not an isolated event. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, with terrorist groups repeatedly targeting national infrastructure to destabilize the region. As of the time of filing this report, no group has officially claimed responsibility for the act.
The destruction of power infrastructure poses a serious challenge to both economic activities and security operations in Yobe State. Many residents are calling for tighter surveillance around key installations to prevent future attacks and ensure the safety of critical public assets.
