Why PDP National Chairman should come from North – Ciroma

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee, Maryam Inna Ciroma, has stated that the position of the party’s National Chairman should rightfully come from the North.

Speaking on Prime Time, an Arise Television programme monitored on Thursday, Ciroma explained that the PDP operates on a zoning and rotational system that balances power between the North and South every four years. She said since the party’s zoning committee had already zoned the presidency to the South, the chairmanship should naturally go to the North.

“PDP zones positions and rotates them after four years. Since the presidency has been zoned to the South, the chairmanship must return to the North,” Ciroma said. She further explained that the North had held a consensus meeting last Friday to finalize the internal distribution of positions among the northern zones.

According to her, it was agreed that positions previously assigned to the North Central should move to the North West, those in the North West to the North East, and those in the North East back to the North Central. This internal rotation ensures fairness within the region.

Ciroma also clarified that even though Umar Iliya Damagum is currently acting as PDP National Chairman, the seat should belong to the North Central zone under the new arrangement. She disclosed that both the North West and North Central zones have met and jointly endorsed former Minister Tanimu Turaki for the position of National Chairman.
