NNL: Akwa United get government directives to push for NPFL promotion

Akwa United has been handed a clear directive by the Akwa Ibom State Government — gain promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) next season or face consequences. The stern message came from the Commissioner for Sport, Elder Paul Bassey, during his visit to the team’s training camp in Eket.

Bassey expressed satisfaction with the players’ training intensity and professionalism, praising their renewed determination to bounce back. “I am impressed with the quality displayed in training today. The energy, intensity, and commitment are good,” he said. “Remember, Akwa United is not a second division club. You must carry yourselves with that in mind and push for promotion.”

The Promise Keepers suffered relegation from the NPFL after a disappointing 2024–2025 campaign, where they finished 18th on the table. The team has now begun a closed camping session in Eket to build fitness and team spirit ahead of the new Nigeria National League (NNL) season.

According to the team’s management, this season’s goal is simple — secure immediate promotion and restore the club’s pride among Nigeria’s elite football clubs. The players have been urged to stay focused and prove that Akwa United belongs at the top level of Nigerian football.

Akwa United will open their NNL campaign against Solution FC on November 8, with fans hoping the team’s hard work and determination will mark the beginning of their journey back to the NPFL.
