CAF Awards: Nwabali, Bameyi nominated for Best Goalkeeper, Young Player

Two Nigerian football stars, Stanley Nwabali and Daniel Bameyi, have earned nominations for the 2025 CAF Awards, marking another proud moment for Nigerian football. Nwabali, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa, has been nominated for the CAF Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for the second year in a row.

Nwabali’s consistent performances between the posts for both club and country have made him one of Africa’s top goalkeepers. The Nigerian international was first nominated in 2024, following his standout displays at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). However, Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns won the award that year.

This time, Nwabali will be hoping to go one better and clinch the title as Africa’s best shot-stopper. His calm presence, quick reflexes, and leadership have been key to Nigeria’s recent defensive success.

Meanwhile, Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has been shortlisted for the CAF Young Player of the Year award. Bameyi impressed fans and scouts alike with his brilliant performances during the 2025 AFCON in Egypt and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, where he displayed maturity and skill beyond his age.

The nominations reflect the growth and quality of young Nigerian players on the continent. Both Nwabali and Bameyi will be looking to bring the awards home and continue Nigeria’s legacy of excellence in African football.
