The Nigeria Police Force has filed charges against Aloy Ejimakor, lawyer to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, along with his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others. The charges stem from their involvement in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja on Monday.
According to court documents shared by former Human Rights Commission Chairman, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, the police accused the defendants of inciting public disturbance and breaching the peace in violation of a court order. The document claimed that the protesters disrupted traffic, restricted movement, and chanted songs demanding the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, confirmed that those arrested during the protest would face prosecution after investigation. He explained that Ejimakor, Prince Emmanuel, and several others were detained for attempting to enter restricted areas during the demonstration.
Hundeyin said, “We arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and his lawyer because they insisted on accessing restricted zones. Six other protesters were arrested near the Transcorp area for the same reason. In total, eight were initially taken into custody and moved to the State CID for investigation.”
He added that the police acted according to an existing court order restricting such gatherings and that those found guilty would face the full weight of the law. Monday’s protest marked one of the biggest demonstrations since Kanu’s detention, drawing attention to ongoing calls for his release and renewed debates about civil rights in Nigeria.
