‘Fake news threat to national stability’ – Sultan advocates social media regulation

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on the Federal Government to put measures in place to regulate social media, warning that the rapid spread of fake news poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s peace and stability.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Northern Traditional Rulers Council General Assembly held in Birnin Kebbi, the Sultan expressed concern over how easily false information spreads online. He noted that many Nigerians tend to believe and share misinformation without verification, a development he said could lead to division and unrest.

“It is now time for the government to regulate social media in the country. The spread of fake news is dangerous and must be addressed,” the Sultan stated.

He also used the platform to commend the Nigerian military for their relentless efforts in tackling insecurity across different parts of the country. According to him, without their courage and commitment, gatherings like the traditional rulers’ assembly might not have been possible.

The Sultan condemned those who constantly criticize the military despite their sacrifices, saying such harsh remarks only discourage security personnel who risk their lives daily to protect the nation. “They are doing their best to restore security in many parts of the country. Criticism does not help; it only dampens their morale,” he added.

Abubakar further urged Nigerians to support security agencies and use social media responsibly to promote unity and national development rather than spreading harmful content.
