Ghana influenced Nigerian hit songs – Singer Lasmid claims

Ghanaian singer Ladsmid Nathaniel Owusu, popularly known as Lasmid, has stirred controversy after claiming that Ghana played a major role in the success of Nigerian hit songs. The “Bad Boy” crooner stated that many Nigerian Afrobeats songs first gained massive popularity in Ghana before becoming hits in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview with Hip TV, Lasmid explained that Ghanaian audiences often embrace Nigerian songs earlier than Nigerians themselves. He added that Ghanaian music lovers have a deep admiration for Nigerian artists, sometimes even more than their own musicians.

“We love Nigerians so much, even more than ourselves. If a Nigerian drops a song, it will first blow in Ghana before it blows in Nigeria. Most Nigerian songs became hits in Ghana first before gaining attention at home,” Lasmid said.

He cited Spyro’s hit song “Who’s Your Guy” as an example, noting that it became a major success in Ghana before catching on in Nigeria. Lasmid emphasized that the connection between both countries’ music industries remains strong, with Ghanaian fans always supporting Nigerian artists.

His comments have reignited the Ghana vs Nigeria music rivalry on social media, as fans from both sides continue to debate which country has had more influence on the African music scene. This echoes a past controversy involving Mr Eazi, who once claimed that Ghanaian sounds influenced Nigerian music — a statement that sparked heavy backlash from Nigerians.
