The Yobe State Government has approved the immediate release of ₦2.1 billion to clear outstanding gratuities owed to retired local government workers. The payment covers the period from January 2020 to May 2025, marking a major effort to reduce pension-related debts in the state.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Local and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Adamu Jajere, the approval was confirmed as part of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s continued commitment to the welfare of retirees and financial accountability in governance.
The statement revealed that the Governor has directed that gratuity payments be integrated into the monthly financial schedule of local governments, ensuring that future retirement benefits are paid promptly alongside pensions. This step is aimed at ending delays and preventing the accumulation of unpaid entitlements.
Commissioner Jajere described the decision as a reflection of Governor Buni’s compassionate and people-focused leadership, adding that the move would restore financial stability and dignity to retired workers who served the state faithfully. He assured that the ministry has started transparent disbursement arrangements to ensure that only eligible beneficiaries receive the payments.
The initiative, according to the Commissioner, aligns with the administration’s broader plan to promote fiscal discipline, enhance social welfare, and support citizens who contributed to Yobe State’s growth and development over the years.
