Delta LGA bans okada, keke riders from wearing face masks

The Udu Local Government Area of Delta State has announced a ban on commercial motorcyclists (okada) and tricycle operators (keke) from wearing face masks while on duty. The decision was made following rising concerns over criminal activities in the area, with some suspects reportedly using masks to conceal their identities during operations.

Chairman of the council explained that the measure is aimed at enhancing security and helping law enforcement agencies identify riders easily. He noted that while the use of masks was once a health precaution during the pandemic, it has now become a tool for criminal disguise in certain parts of the community.

The council also directed security operatives to enforce the ban and ensure that violators face appropriate sanctions. However, the chairman assured residents that genuine riders who obey the new rule and maintain proper identification will not be harassed.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions to the development. While some believe the policy will curb crime, others argue it could affect riders’ comfort, especially during harmattan and dusty weather.
