Controversial Nigerian clergyman, Prophet Chukwuemeka Odumeje, has criticized prominent pastors, Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church, for remaining silent on the current state of the nation. Odumeje questioned why these influential men of God, who openly spoke about national issues during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, have chosen not to comment on Nigeria’s worsening economic and social challenges under the present government.
Speaking during a recent church service, Odumeje expressed disappointment over what he described as “selective boldness” among top religious leaders. He said that true men of God should not keep quiet when the people are suffering, regardless of who is in power. According to him, silence in the face of injustice and hardship is a form of complicity that weakens the moral authority of the church.
The Onitsha-based pastor also noted that many Nigerians look up to respected clerics like Adeboye and Oyedepo for guidance and moral direction. He argued that their voices could make a difference in holding political leaders accountable and inspiring hope among citizens. Odumeje urged fellow church leaders to speak out more boldly about issues affecting ordinary Nigerians instead of avoiding political conversations.
His comments have since sparked mixed reactions across social media platforms, with some Nigerians supporting his stance, while others believe that religious leaders should stay away from politics. Despite the controversy, Odumeje maintained that prophets have a duty to speak truth to power and defend the poor when the government fails to deliver good governance.
