The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public health alert following reports of suspected viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) cases in Abuja. According to the agency, two recent suspected cases have tested negative for Ebola and Marburg viruses. However, further investigations are ongoing for other viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Lassa fever and Dengue.
The NCDC confirmed that swift action from vigilant health workers and early reporting by a traveller helped reduce the risk of wider exposure. The agency urged Nigerians to remain calm and rely only on official updates to avoid misinformation and panic.
Citizens are advised to take preventive steps, including regular handwashing, practising good hygiene, and avoiding direct contact with anyone who has unexplained fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or bleeding. People experiencing such symptoms, especially after travel, are encouraged to seek medical help immediately.
The NCDC also reminded the public to call its toll-free number 6232 for guidance or to report suspected cases. The health body emphasized that vigilance and cooperation are key to keeping communities safe, stressing that accurate information—not rumours—remains the best tool in preventing disease spread.
