Restive communities must bury grievances, embrace peace – Obong of Calabar

The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V, has called on traditional rulers in Calabar South to bury their grievances and embrace peace for the sake of development. He warned that prolonged disputes among leaders only worsen the challenges facing their people.

Speaking at his Efanga Nsa Palace when the Paramount Ruler of Calabar South, HRM Etubom Nyong Efiom Okon, paid him a courtesy visit, the monarch stressed the need for tolerance, dialogue, and compromise in leadership. He specifically charged the Paramount Ruler to reconcile factions in Henshaw Town and other troubled areas within the council.

The Obong further reminded traditional leaders that they are custodians of peace and must lead by example. He urged Etubom Nyong and the Traditional Rulers Council to bring aggrieved groups together, while assuring them of his full support in difficult situations. According to him, the traditional institution remains a vital pillar of unity in Efik land and must continue to serve as a rallying point for harmony.

Responding, Etubom Nyong likened his return to the palace to that of a victorious warrior, noting that his emergence as Paramount Ruler marked a historic milestone for the Efik people. He pledged to work closely with the Obong’s palace to strengthen the Efik throne, while also assuring that he has begun consultations with stakeholders to foster peace and unity in Calabar South.
