Mob kills police inspector mistaken for motorcycle thief after suspect he arrested raised false alarm in Plateau

A tragic incident occurred in Plateau State when a police officer, Inspector Lasare Jeremiah, and a suspect he had arrested lost their lives after a mob attack in Nyakala community, Bassa Local Government Area.

According to reports, Inspector Jeremiah, who worked with the Criminal Investigation Department of the Plateau State Police Command, was attacked by residents on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

The mob descended on him after the suspect he had arrested, Audu Abdullahi, falsely accused him of being a motorcycle thief.

Police spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, confirmed the unfortunate event and revealed that three individuals have already been arrested in connection with the mob action.

Giving further details, Alfred explained that contrary to claims spreading earlier that both men were motorcycle thieves, one of them was actually a serving police officer.

He narrated that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department were investigating a petition against Abdullahi, who lives in Kishika Village, Bassa.

While on the case, they spotted him riding a motorcycle through Binchi Village and followed him into Nyakala Village where he was eventually stopped.

Unfortunately, Abdullahi immediately raised a false alarm, shouting that the detectives were motorcycle thieves. This triggered an angry mob who attacked Inspector Jeremiah.

Realizing their mistake, the crowd then turned on Abdullahi and assaulted him severely. Both men were quickly taken to Cottage Hospital in Kisalloi, Bassa, where Jeremiah died while receiving treatment.

Abdullahi was later transferred to Jos University Teaching Hospital but also passed away from his injuries.

DSP Alfred noted that the matter is under investigation by the State CID in Jos. He added that the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, expressed deep sadness over the loss and strongly warned against mob justice.
