Charles Oputa, also known as Charley Boy or Area Fada, has opened up about the stress he experienced after the busstop rename controversy and why he needed time off to focus on his mental health.
In Lagos, a busstop named after Charley Boy was changed to Olamide busstop. This was part of a wider move where many streets and busstops originally named after Igbos were given Yoruba names, sparking tension and debate.
During the controversy, Charley Boy said that while the names of busstops could be changed, his legacy could never be erased.
He revealed that he traveled abroad to take a break “before Nigeria happen” to him, giving himself space to recover from the chaos.
Even while away, he admitted he kept wanting to return to Nigeria, even though the same environment had caused him sleepless nights.
Charley Boy emphasized that depression is real and said he was lucky to step away from the situation and return to Nigeria feeling refreshed.
He also pointed out that not everyone has the chance to take a break to reset their mental health. He stressed the importance of discussing mental health openly because it is not something to ignore.
