Nasir El-Rufai has advised former governors Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi to stop promising a one-term presidency, arguing that Nigerians are skeptical about such claims.
El-Rufai, who previously served as Kaduna State Governor, shared his thoughts on the Sunday Politics show on Channels Television on August 31.
Peter Obi had earlier said that if elected president in 2027, he would serve only one term, claiming four years would be enough to reset Nigeria’s system.
Similarly, Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, mentioned that he is willing to serve a single term if he wins his party’s presidential ticket, emphasizing that stepping down after four years would support rotation and stability.
Responding to these claims, El-Rufai argued that both former governors should know from experience that meaningful reforms take longer than four years.
He said, “When people say they will serve only one term, I don’t think anyone truly believes them. It’s not right to give up your constitutional right. Anyone who has governed, like Amaechi or Peter Obi, understands that real change requires time. Four years is too short.”
El-Rufai also warned that politicians often go back on one-term promises once they assume office.
He added, “I appeal to everyone to stop making promises like ‘I will serve four years’ or ‘eight years,’ because most people do not believe these claims.”
