Dad and daughter die after eating Thai curry made with deadly wild mushrooms

A father and his daughter died in Chiang Rai, Thailand, after eating a Thai curry made with wild mushrooms that were poisonous.

Boonpan, 78, and his 40-year-old daughter Wijitra ate the mushrooms on August 22, which had been given to them as a gift from a friend.

Shortly after eating, Boonpan began foaming at the mouth and convulsing. Relatives found Wijitra unconscious in her locked bedroom. Both were taken to the hospital but were later pronounced dead.

Wijitra’s older sister, Thatsanee, 49, said the mushrooms were unfamiliar to the family. “My sister had never cooked with this type of mushroom before because she didn’t usually like mushrooms.

This was the first time,” she said. Other relatives had also received some mushrooms but had not eaten them yet.

The family described the horror of seeing Boonpan shake violently and said it is difficult to know which mushrooms are poisonous.

“I love mushrooms, but after what happened, I will never touch them again. It’s difficult to tell which ones are dangerous,” Thatsanee added.

A sample of the mushrooms has been sent to a local hospital for testing. This tragedy is one of several mushroom poisoning cases around the world, including a case in Australia where a woman was found guilty of poisoning her in-laws with deadly mushrooms earlier this year.

Authorities continue to warn people to be very careful when handling or eating wild mushrooms, noting that even experienced cooks can be at risk when using unfamiliar types.
