2027: Talks are ongoing for Obi and Jonathan to join PDP presidential race — Senator Moro

Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has revealed that former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s Peter Obi may return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 26, Moro confirmed that conversations were already taking place with both men as part of PDP’s strategy to reclaim power.

He explained that some members of the party have been reaching out to Obi, telling him to come back to the PDP, with the assurance that if he does, he stands a strong chance of becoming the party’s candidate.

When asked about the possibility of Jonathan returning, Moro said discussions were also ongoing with the former president and noted that it remained a clear possibility.

Jonathan, who became president in 2011 after the death of Musa Yar’Adua, lost his re-election bid to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, becoming the first sitting Nigerian president to be defeated at the polls.

Since then, he has largely kept a low profile, though his supporters have continued to push for his political comeback.

Peter Obi, on the other hand, served as governor of Anambra State and was PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 before moving to the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 elections.

His campaign, which gained massive support from young Nigerians, saw him finish third behind APC’s Bola Tinubu and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.

With less than two years to the next election, Obi has been aligning with opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition while showing interest in contesting again. However, it remains uncertain which party platform he will eventually use.

The PDP recently zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, a move expected to strongly influence alliances, negotiations, and strategies as the opposition prepares for a highly competitive election.
