An inquest has confirmed that 32-year-old Jade Damarell, a skydiver from County Durham, UK, took her own life by falling 15,500ft from a plane just hours after ending her relationship.
She hit the ground instantly at Wrefords’ Farm in Peterlee after not deploying her parachute. Coroner Dr. Leslie Hamilton officially recorded her death as suicide.
Jade’s skydiving club, Sky-High Skydiving, said the incident appeared deliberate and that there was no negligence from the staff.
The inquest revealed that Jade ended her eight-month relationship with her boyfriend, Ben Goodfellow, the night before her death and left notes for her family around 2:30 am.
On the morning of April 27, Jade was seen having breakfast by Bryn Chaffe, co-owner of Sky-High Skydiving. He said she seemed quiet, but this was normal for her.
Despite having more than 500 jumps to her name, she made no attempt to use her parachute or backup system, and she had disabled her automatic activation device, which normally deploys the chute at a set altitude.
A report by British Skydiving confirmed that all her equipment was fully functional, and the day before her death, she had completed six jumps without any issues. Jade’s cause of death was recorded as blunt force trauma, including a fractured skull, and the police confirmed that her death was not considered suspicious.

Following the inquest, Jade’s family paid tribute and thanked the skydiving community for their support. They said the club helped them honor her life with a fitting tribute, ending with her mother, Liz, making a final tandem jump in memory of Jade.
The family described her as brave, beautiful, and full of life, touching many lives with her warmth and kindness. They hope that by sharing her story, it will encourage understanding and support for mental health struggles.
Although Jade’s life ended too soon, her family says her love, spirit, and courage will continue to inspire everyone who knew her.
