Women Are Not Respected in Nigerian Music Industry – Tems

Grammy award-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has shared her concerns about how women are treated in Nigeria’s music scene.

She revealed that women are often not given the respect they deserve within the industry.

Tems explained that when she started her music career, she found it hard to be taken seriously simply because she was a woman.

Speaking in a recent interview with the BBC, the Love Me Jeje crooner said, “People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry.”

She added that she is determined to change how women view themselves in music and plans to do this through her new project, The Leading Vibe Initiative.

According to Tems, the initiative is designed to help women access better opportunities, connect with bigger audiences, and achieve greater success.

She also advised upcoming female musicians to clearly define their goals, brand, and personal limits, stressing the importance of knowing what they are willing and not willing to do for fame.

It is worth noting that other top female Nigerian artists, including Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, have also spoken out about the challenges they face due to gender bias in the industry.
