A Nigerian mother has expressed her frustration over the large number of students who failed English and Mathematics in the 2025 WAEC exams. She urged the examination body, WAEC, to explain why so many candidates performed poorly this year.
In a video going viral online, the concerned mum blamed the failure on how the exams were scheduled. She questioned why students were made to write important papers like English at night, instead of during the day. She claimed this unusual timing affected the students’ performance badly.
Speaking with emotion, she called on other mothers to raise their voices and not keep silent. According to her, only a small number of students passed, especially in Maths and English. She believes the entire process was flawed and wants mothers to come together and demand answers.
She asked, “Where in the world do students write exams at night?” She said that most of this year’s exam papers were not properly handled and the results reflect that failure. She warned that if people ignore the issue now, it may affect even more students in the future.
WAEC released the 2025 results on August 4, showing that out of nearly 2 million candidates, only 38.32% passed with credit in five subjects including English and Maths. This is a big drop compared to 2024, where over 72% of candidates achieved the same result.
Earlier in May, there was already public outrage when students wrote their English paper late into the night. Videos showed many of them using torchlights and candles to complete the test. The paper, which was supposed to start at 4pm, eventually began at 7pm and ended at 9pm.
WAEC later apologized for the delay, saying it was a move to prevent exam malpractice and question leakage. However, parents and even state officials demanded that the paper be canceled. WAEC went ahead to score it anyway.
Now, with poor results and growing anger from parents, especially mothers, more questions are being asked about the fairness and quality of this year’s WAEC exams.
