A great percentage of these Nigerian Americans making us proud abroad are Igbos – Hadiza, wife of former gov, Nasir El-Rufai, says

Hadiza El-Rufai, the wife of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has gotten people talking after she shared her views about the Igbo community living outside Nigeria.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she said that many Nigerian-Americans who are doing well and representing the country positively are of Igbo origin. She also noted that there are always two sides to every story and ended her message with the hashtag #SayNoToBigotry.

Her statement caused a stir online. Some users agreed with her and saw it as praise for the Igbos. However, others believed it was politically motivated. They accused her and her family of trying to get support from the Igbo community ahead of the 2027 general elections. These critics also pointed out that the El-Rufais have openly opposed the Tinubu administration and might be working toward unseating the current government.

In response to the criticism, Hadiza posted again. She stood by her original comment and said no one should be denied their right to free speech. She also asked Nigerians to stop turning everything into a political matter, making it clear her words were just an honest opinion.
