Former Nigerian leader, General Yakubu Gowon, has called on African leaders to make affordable housing a major part of their development plans. He believes this will help improve the lives of people across the continent.
Gowon’s message was delivered by Professor Suleiman Bogoro, who used to lead the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). He spoke at the opening ceremony of the 19th Africa International Housing Show (AIHS), which took place on Tuesday in Abuja.
The event, organized by Festus Adebayo, CEO of AIHS, focused on the theme: “Re-imagining Housing Through Innovation, Collaboration, and Policy.” The goal was to explore new ways to improve housing across Africa.
Gowon said that the housing shortage in Africa is one of the continent’s biggest problems. He explained that having affordable homes is important for better public health, good education, and stronger economic growth.
He also urged African leaders to promote city development that includes everyone and supports long-term goals. Gowon wants leaders to make sure that housing policies are not only effective but also fair to all.
According to him, solving the housing problem will require new ideas, more investment, and proper execution of plans. He stressed that these steps are necessary to meet the housing needs of Africa’s fast-growing population.
