US to deny visa to pregnant women travelling to give birth so their children can become American citizens

The United States government has announced that women who try to visit the country to give birth so their child can get U.S. citizenship will be denied a visa.

This update is part of the U.S. government’s plan to stop what is called “birth tourism.” This is when foreign women travel to the U.S. mainly to give birth, so their babies automatically become American citizens.

The US Mission in Nigeria shared this warning on its official social media pages on Monday, July 28.

In the post, they said, “If your main reason for visiting the U.S. is to give birth so your child will be a citizen, that is not allowed. Visa officers will reject your application if they believe this is your plan.”

The U.S. also warned people to be truthful about why they want to visit. If someone lies about their travel purpose, it could lead to serious immigration problems in the future.

The U.S. Department of State explained that visa officers are now told to reject any application if they find strong evidence that the person is mainly coming to the U.S. to give birth and get citizenship for their baby.
