Trump says he’s disappointed in Putin; to shorten 50-day ceasefire ultimatum

President Donald Trump has said he’s very disappointed in Russian President Vladimir Putin because of how Russia is handling the war in Ukraine. He had earlier given a 50-day deadline for a peace deal to be reached, but now he says he may act even before the 50 days are up.

“We could have made an agreement five times already,” Trump said during a press briefing. “I’ve talked a lot with President Putin, and the talks went very well each time. But then he goes out, launches missiles into a city like Kyiv, and kills people in a nursing home. Bodies lying in the streets — that’s not how to do it. So I’m very disappointed. We’re going to review the situation, and I’m going to reduce the 50 days I gave him to a lesser number, because I think I already know how this is going to end.”

Trump had made it clear that if there’s no agreement within that time, the U.S. would place 100% tariffs and extra sanctions on Russia. According to White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt, the U.S. also plans to punish other countries that continue buying oil from Russia. These new rules are meant to hurt Russia financially and force them to consider ending the war.

The U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessant, said that if America goes ahead with these stronger measures, European allies should do the same. Energy Secretary Chris Wright also pointed out that banning or limiting Russian oil is still a possible way to pressure Russia to stop fighting in Ukraine.

Recently, Trump hinted that he might not wait the full 50 days. When asked whether he was getting ready to impose these new sanctions, Trump said they were watching everything closely. He added that it’s possible they may go ahead with the plan earlier than expected.
